Feeding Pigs In Nigeria

Feeding pigs in Nigeria is quite easy but tricky. There are two ways to go compounding a balanced ration using crop produce(maize, soya e.t.c) or utilizing industrial byproducts. The latter option is more affordable and produces good results, so that’s what I will discuss.

There are a variety of Agricultural and Food Industrial byproducts available for feeding pigs, listed below are those I have used and have access to:

  • PKC(Palm Kernel Cake)-PKC currently retails between 12-19 Naira per kilogram depending on the stage of processing. There are two useful stages of processing; “First Crush” and “Second Crush”.

The First Crush contains more oil and is more expensive. PKC is mostly made up of Carbohydrates and Protein with trace amounts of phosphorus, it cannot be used solely in feeding.

  • Cassava Peels

  • Brewery Waste- This is a popular choice amongst most pig farms because of its availability, nutrients and cheap cost. A tipper load of brewery waste costs between 12,000-40,000 Naira depending on the source, quantity and the location of your farm.

  • Indomie Waste

Pigs are just like humans they are very much concerned about the palatability of their diet, so it’s always a good idea to include salt and mix the feed with sufficient water to make it soft, palatable and digestible. If the food is not palatable they will eat it but grudgingly which will definitely affect their daily weight gain.

Whatever you decide to feed them you should strive to achieve a well balanced ration containing essential requirements for growth and productivity.

Below is the nutritional requirement for a growing pig:

Energy sources 65-75%
Protein sources 20-25%
Calcium/Phosphorus sources 2-3%
Mineral/Vitamin additives + salt 1.5-2%

There are other several cheap, highly nutritious and readily availabe feed rations for Pigs.
All these details, prices and sources are readily available when you Order the e-book:
